Strength in Numbers (of Conscious Shoppers)

With all the local marketplaces and events this time of year, those of us who are embedded in our community of local do-ers and movers don’t necessarily need an annual tradition boosted by a credit card company to remember the importance of supporting local economy. Still, Small Business Saturday is another one of those special days each year that we love, appreciate, and look forward to.

According to the National Retail Federation, about 164 million consumers are expected to shop on Black Friday in 2017. For the seventh year, Small Business Saturday plans to redirect some of those shoppers to local businesses across the country rather than big-box retailers. For every $100 spent at a local business, $43 stays in local economy, whereas only $13 stays in local economy if spent at a non-locally-owned business.

American Express maintains that they “Seized the moment” during the recession in 2010 while we, the consumers and producers, “Created the movement.” In 2011, the US Senate unanimously passed a resolution bringing all 50 states into the conversation of how to strengthen local economies. As of 2016, approximately $15.4 billion was generated by small business owners on Small Business Saturday alone.  112 million shoppers celebrated Small Business Saturday last year. Truly, this movement is on a roll.

Backed by the Small Business Administration, as well as corporate partners including Etsy, the NBA, and Verizon, Small Business Saturday lifts up the 538,552 small businesses (classified as firms employing less than 500 employees) in Arizona. On this day each year, these businesses are not only lauded as an option for wiser consumption, but also as a gathering place and cause for celebration for our vibrant, diverse, and productive communities.
